Short history

Templemere – fabulous at 40

Templemere, on Oatlands Drive, Weybridge celebrated its 40th Ruby anniversary on Saturday, September 6, with a garden party and barbecue for residents past and present.

Festivities included a “Red” fancy dress parade for children, followed by tea and cakes, children’s entertainment, an ‘open garden’ event, barbecue, disco and firework finale.

Several of the original residents still live at Templemere, including Steve Tilley and George and Betty Annesley. They will be joined at the party by many of their former neighbours on this unique estate.

Betty Annesley and her husband moved to Templemere after spending 15 years in Africa, alerted by an advertisement in the window of the British Council, and attracted by the spacious grounds and the modern houses with huge picture windows:

“It was the ideal neighbourhood to raise my two young sons – safe and with a great sense of community – important as my husband had to return to Africa for a while.”

Built in 1963 by Span Developments the estate won a coveted Civic Trust award the following year for “making an outstanding contribution to the appearance of the local scene”.

And Templemere looks every bit as good today as it did then. Set in 12 acres of landscaped gardens and woodlands leading down to the Broadwater, it is an estate of 65 linked houses, arranged in short terraces or crescents. The hexagaonal design of the four bedroom houses and the staggered arrangement of the three bedroom houses, still have a contemporary feel 40 years on.
